The King of Limbs is not the masterpiece Radiohead fans have come to expect, and while it still delivers some of the great high points and the interesting production the band is known for, it left listeners a little confused and craving something more fully formed.

The band still does some interesting things on The King of Limbs, which at times draws from the electronic-forward production and trippy guitar sounds of Amnesiac that sometimes makes you feel like you’re wandering the desert. But The King of Limbs uses more conventional song strictures and the mix isn’t always as layered, which makes the record feel less fleshed out.

The genuine beauty of “Bloom,” mysterious groove of “Lotus Flower”  and zen of “Codex” and “Separator” carry the album. However, “Morning Mr Magpie,” “Little By Little” and “Feral” do feel like Amnesiac b-sides, and  “Give Up the Ghost” is a pleasant, but unimpressive, ballad compared to the others in the band’s catalog.

The album’s real shortcoming though is that it leaves you feeling unsatisfied. At only 8 tracks and under 38 minutes long, it’s Radiohead’s shortest record to date, and it really does feel like it’s missing something. Most tracks have something cool going on you can talk yourself into, even if the high-end moments don’t quite knock your socks off like Radiohead’s best works, but must also have something that feels a little off or underwhelming.
