2013 Deli Poll: Preseason Heisman Watch

by Nicholas Cicale (@nickcicale)

Happy college football kickoff everyone! Enjoy the games tonight and this weekend, and keep an eye on this year’s preseason Heisman hopefuls.

1. Johnny Manziel, QB

I know winning it back to back is close to impossible and there’s been a lot of negativity during the offseason surrounding Johnny Football, but that might be blinding people of the fact that he’s still a really good football player, and was a freshman last year.  He’s the reigning champion and now there’s no doubt he’ll be eligible to play this season. He’ll put up monster numbers again for A&M.

An NCAA Player Money Article

by Nicholas Cicale (@nickcicale)

With the Johnny Manziel autograph controversy of the summer coming to an almost comical resolution (he’ll be suspended for the first half of the season… opener, even though the NCAA determined he didn’t get paid for signing autographs) on the eve of the college football season, I thought now would be as good a time as ever to write my opinions on money in college sports.

My 2013 Preseason NFL Awards Predictions

MVP

1. Tom Brady, QB
326px-Tom_BradyPredicted Stats: 4600 passing yards, 39 passing TDs, 10 int

It’s really, really hard to go against Tom Brady or Peyton Manning in the preseason for MVP, because come the end of the year you know they’ll be getting votes.  Brady loves to show off whenever the Patriots are facing adversity.  The Aaron Hernandez situation.  Gronkowski’s injuries.  The loss of Wes Welker.  Everyone seems to think that the Pats will rely on run the ball this year, but I think Brady just goes off.

2. Russell Wilson, QB
400px-Russell_Wilson_vs_Vikings,_November_4,_2012Predicted Stats: 3500 passing Yards, 750 rushing yards, 36 total TDs, 10 int

With 26 TD on the year, it was Russell Wilson, not Andrew Luck, who tied Peyton Manning’s rookie TD passing record.  Wilson also added 4 rushing TD, bringing his TD total to 30 against only 13 total turnovers as he was learning the offense.  His grasp of the game improved each week, as he showed poise and leadership beyond his years on his way to a road playoff victory.  Even if his stats don’t dwarf those of his rivals by the end of the year, there’s no doubt in my mind that Wilson would have done more for his team than almost any other offensive player in the NFL.

3. Adrian Peterson, RB
Predicted Stats: 365 touches, 1900 total yards, 12 TDs

I just would like to say that if AP does what he did last season, HE WILL WIN MVP AGAIN.  I don’t see it happening, and with voters go crazy over QBs every year, anything short of 2000 yards will just fall short.Continue reading “My 2013 Preseason NFL Awards Predictions”

Kicking Off the Preseason the Right Way: Five reasons the Pro Bowl should be moved to the NFL preseason.

by Nicholas Cicale (@nickcicale)

Two weeks into the preseason and I’ve already watch more sports over the last two weeks than I did almost all summer.  The games are meaningless and might not even feature everyone’s favorite teams, yet millions are tuning in to see whatever game their local cable provider decided to air because, let’s be honest, it is football.  But what would happen if the NFL put a real game of significance in the preseason? Or a game that assured fans that their favorite team would get air time?  The fans would go absolutely nuts.  The solution I have (if the title of this post didn’t give it away already) MOVE THE PRO BOWL TO THE BEGINNING OF THE NFL PRESEASON!Continue reading “Kicking Off the Preseason the Right Way: Five reasons the Pro Bowl should be moved to the NFL preseason.”

MLB’s Not-So-Instant Replay

by Nicholas Cicale (@nickcicale)

So baseball,  you finally decided to use instant replay to your advantage. Just like everyone’s been saying you should for the last 10 years. Oh wait; you can only challenge certain plays? Oh, a coach only has restrictions on what inning and how many times he can challenge a play?Continue reading “MLB’s Not-So-Instant Replay”

What a Quarterback’s Worth

by Nicholas Cicale (@nickcicale)

With all of the contract extensions given out this off season to big time quarterbacks, like Tony Romo, Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, Aaron Rodgers  and now Matt Ryan, I decided to compare how much the QBs around the league are worth.   (I didn’t taking the rookie wage scale into account)

Tier 1 – The One man show

Smart, accurate and reliable, these QBs are the reason for their team’s success.  It doesn’t seem to matter if there are pieces in place around them, these guys get the job done. Plus, they’ve each won a Super Bowl.

Tom Brady – Three Super Bowl rings in five appearances, and two MVP awards.  The Patriots team has changed a lot since 2000, but Brady’s been a constant, and has altered his approach to the game on countless occasions.  He makes anyone in his offense more explosive, and whether it’s Randy Moss or Danny Woodhead, his offense has carries the team to the post season.

Aaron Rodgers  – Let’s face it.  Rodgers has never had any semblance of a running game behind him, or a defense to hold his leads.  And he’s never had a truly elite receiver to throw the ball to.  In fact, he rarely has the same group of guys on the field on week to the next.  But no matter who they throw out there, they become superstars thanks to Rodgers’ magic.

Drew Brees – Like with the Packers, it’s hard to know if the Saints have good receivers, or if Drew Brees makes them effective players.  Brees was able to keep most of the team intact during his coach’s suspension last year, and it was the defense, not Brees, that let the Saints down.

On the Bubble — Peyton Manning – Peyton’s a little older than the guys above him, and has a lot more in place.  A strong defense.  Three top receivers.  A young running game.  An established offensive line.  It’s not his fault that he has a lot to work with, and I think that he could still push a team on his own, but for the rest of his career he won’t have to.

Tier 2 – The True Franchise Quarterback
